This isn’t really a homesteading post so feel free to skip it if you are at a perfect weight and your hair is thick enough for 3 people.

Today I am talking weight loss and wigs – the story I never intended to share. I worried about sharing this because I so often talk about clean eating and simple living…how would this fit in with my beliefs and what you all know about me? BUT on my walk today I felt like God was prompting me to lay it all out there because someone needed to hear it. So I put it on my private Facebook page. The response was so incredible it brought me to tears! Then a blogging friend said, please share this with your readers; I took a deep breath and typed this out!

Truth #1 – Backyard homesteaders know how to use the space we are given.  Sure we might not have acres…we might not even have a 1/4 acre.  But we have learned to make the most of what we have; and every space is utilized.

Truth #2 – We love a good DIY.  From making soap to building chicken coops from pallets.  We love a do-it-yourself project.

Truth #3 – Many backyard homesteaders are trying to keep their homestead on the DL (down low folks). Some are in HOAs that don’t allow vegetable gardens, much less chickens and others have city ordinances working against them….

I don’t write a lot of super personal things on Imperfectly Happy.  It isn’t that I don’t want you to know, but I figure there are more interesting things to talk about.  lol  But as we wrap up 2015 and I’m 2 and half years into this blog I thought you might want to know a bit more about me.  So I put together this list of random things/facts about me.  So let’s start with a freebie fact…the picture on the left is the character I’ve used for the blog from the start.  She is the creation of my niece, a gifted artist.  She some of my features (before I cut all my hair off) with aspects I wanted in to create her.  The one on the right is me…earlier this year.

Goodbye Mom

My mom and me in the late 70s.

Goodbye Mom? I don’t write a lot of super personal stuff on Imperfectly Happy.  It isn’t that I am not an open person, I just figure my life isn’t as interesting as the information I have to share.  But today is different.  Today is the 30th anniversary of my mom’s death. It has been one of the hardest I can remember;  I am having trouble stopping the tears. And for whatever reason I feel compelled to write about that.

In 1985 I was a tall, confused, 13 year old with a few pimples. I was also the daughter of a woman who had been sick for 4 years. See my mom was dying of liver cirrhosis, only I didn’t really know that.  I knew she was sick; but I didn’t know she was living on borrowed time.

My mom had been a drug addict for years.  I hate saying that because from my perspective she wasn’t what most people would think of when they think heroine addict.  She was a good mom, we were loved, clean, fed; but she had a secret side too.  In 1981 she was 28 and she was cleaning her life up.  She had a good job, we weren’t living with my grandmother and life seemed to be pretty normal.  My mom had scoliosis and now she finally had insurance to pay for her back to be fixed. But that required a full body cast for months.  So the doctors felt it was necessary to be sure there were no underlying issues that could pop up after surgery….
