How to Save Money at the Grocery Store

February 25, 2021 by Tiffany Davis 6 Comments

Have you noticed that you are spending a lot more at the grocery store than you did in the past? While there may be several reasons for that, one reason is the increasing cost of groceries in the United States.

It is no secret that the cost of many products, including milk and eggs, has drastically increased over the years. Keep reading to discover how to save money at the grocery store.

How to save money at the grocery store.

While dealing with higher prices is frustrating, you can still save money when you shop for the essentials. Set a strict budget based on what you can afford to spend at the grocery store. Once you know how much you can afford to spend, follow the suggestions below to reduce your spending and save a lot more.

Look Through the Weekly Advertisements for Special Deals

Always check the weekly advertisements to find out about special deals that different grocery stores may offer. Sometimes, one store has a better sale than the other one, so it is better to go to the store with the best deals. You can sort through the weekly advertisements of the grocery stores in your area to see what they are offering.

Make sure you compare the cost of different products between the other stores. It helps to look for products that you usually purchase to see if one specific store has items you like on sale. If you know what types of deals are available, you can choose the right place to shop for your groceries. Keep reading for more tips on how to save money at the grocery store!

How to Save Money at the Grocery Store - coupons

Clip the Digital Coupons and Paper Coupons for Different Stores

Use a combination of both digital and paper coupons. Many grocery stores offer digital coupons that you can clip via their website or app. If you have not already downloaded apps for the grocery stores you frequent, now is a good time to do it.

You can sort through those digital coupons to see what types of deals you can get with them. Not all stores will allow you to use digital and paper coupons simultaneously.

Take some extra time to check out the coupon policy for each store you visit beforehand. If you use the digital coupons, you can save hundreds of dollars each month on meats, beverages, and items for your pantry, such as soups, rice, and crackers.

Make a List of What You Need Based on the Available Sales

Try to make a list of what you need for the week based on the sales offered. After looking at the weekly advertisement for some of your favorite stores, you will see what they offer at lower prices.

  • For example, one store may have ground beef at a lower price than others.
  • You should include ground beef on the list because you can buy a large bulk of it and then freeze it.
  • You will save money buying meat in bulk when it is on sale.
  • All you need to do is separate it into sections, place the meat in freezer bags, and put those bags in your freezer.
  • Mark the bags with the date to know exactly when you put them in the freezer and when you need to use them.

It makes the most sense to buy items that are already on sale. If you see certain things that you want but do not genuinely need that are not on sale during a specific week, try to wait until later. If you wait a week or two, those items may eventually get listed in the weekly advertisement with a reduced price.

Shop at One of the More Affordable Grocery Stores to Get Food

It helps to know which grocery stores are best to shop at and which ones tend to charge the most. If you want to save money, your best bet is to avoid Acme. It is listed as one of the more expensive grocery stores in the United States. However, if you have an Aldi in your area, it is a good idea to shop there.

  • Aldi is a smaller grocery store that provides all kinds of great items, including meats, crackers, chips, vegetables, and more.
  • You can find lots of essential items listed at meager prices at Aldi. However, Aldi does not accept coupons, which is its only downfall.
  • Not everyone has an Aldi close to home. If you are one of those people living in an area without an Aldi, try shopping at Wal-Mart or Costco for your groceries.
  • Both of these stores are on a list of the most affordable grocery stores in the United States.
  • If you shop at Costco, you can buy many items in bulk and avoid making multiple trips to the grocery store each week.
  •  When shopping at Wal-Mart, you can use coupons and the price match feature to get even better deals on the different food items.

Go Shopping on a Full Stomach Instead of an Empty One

Never go shopping on an empty stomach. When you are hungry and surrounded by different food options, you will naturally want to grab more and put it in your cart. Unfortunately, this can lead to overspending. It is a better idea to go to the grocery store after eating a large meal.

If you feel full, you are more likely to go into the store and grab what you need without extras. It might sound ridiculous, but it is true. You may even notice a difference between the amount spent on groceries when you go with a full stomach compared to an empty stomach.

How to save money at the grocery store

Follow these simple and practical tips and tricks to start saving more money at the grocery store. While the prices of different foods and beverages are on the rise, there are still plenty of ways for you to cut costs. You want to make the most of the money you have available to spend on groceries.

If you look through weekly advertisements, clip coupons, and make a list in advance, you can avoid overspending. And, if you shop when you are not hungry, you have a better chance of getting precisely what you need without surpassing your budget.
