Do you want to spend less money on laundry while still having clean clothes and accessories? These are my best frugal laundry tips! If you can reduce laundry expenses, you can save money. The money you save can get put into a savings account and used for other expenses.

Frugal laundry tips - how to save money

If you are not sure how to start saving, check out these simple, frugal laundry tips that are incredibly effective. Once you make these changes, you will begin to save and notice the difference! You are going to love learning more about the best frugal laundry tips.

Wash Full Loads Instead of Smaller Ones

Instead of washing small loads, try to wait until you have more clothes accumulated in the hamper. Once you have a decent amount of clothes needing to get cleaned, put on a load and use cold water. You can wash most items in cold water. Of course, if you are dealing with heavily soiled garments, it is typically best to use hot water with the load.

When you only have a few items in the washing machine, you allow it to do a full cycle for just a handful of things. If you want to avoid wasting water, try doing laundry once a week instead of doing it each day. If you do not care too much about mixing different colored garments together, you might even want to wash them in one load.

Save money on laundry - hang your clothes to dry

Hang Your Clothes Up to Dry

While using a dryer is beneficial when you need your clothes dried quickly, it is unnecessary. You will use less energy in the home by hanging your clothes to dry. It is also beneficial to hang clothes if you want to prevent shrinkage from taking place.

Doing Laundry by Hand

Not sure where to hang your clothes to line dry? You have a few good options. You will need a laundry line and a few hooks to get started and this one of the best frugal laundry tips out there.

Backyard

The backyard is a great spot for hanging clothes to dry. While you cannot always use the backyard because of the weather, you can use it most of the time. The fresh breeze will keep your clothes smelling good while they dry. It may take several hours longer than it would take if you used a dryer, but it is not a problem if you are not in a rush for the garments. One thing you will notice is that your clothes can dry exceptionally fast during the hot summer months!

Basement

If you have space in your basement, hang hooks from the ceiling and run your laundry line on the hooks. Make sure to tighten the line to keep it in place when you hang your clothes up. You can also find foldable drying racks that are great to use for small garments, such as bras and underwear.

It might take a day for your garments to dry, but the basement is another great place to hang everything. It is even more convenient if your washing machine is already in the basement.

Frugal Laundry Tips - DIY Dryer Balls

Use Dryer Balls

If hanging your laundry is not an option, trying using dryer balls. Not only do they reduce drying time, using less electric / gas. Using dryer balls will get rid of static electricity naturally.

They are also toxin free. Try making my DIY Wool Dryer Balls!

Skip the Fabric Softener

Do you spend a lot of money on fabric softener each month? You may like the way that it makes your clothes feel. Did you know that there is a better way to keep your clothes soft and wrinkle-free without using products that cost a lot of money and contain harsh chemicals?

Instead of buying fabric softeners, try some of these cheaper, more effective options.

Vinegar

It might sound a bit strange, but vinegar is an excellent replacement for fabric softeners. It only takes a small capful of the vinegar to make a difference. Do not worry! You might think that the vinegar will give your clothes a strong odor, but that is not the case. Instead, the vinegar will remove odors and leave clothes looking brighter than before.

Baking Soda

If you do not want to use vinegar, you can always use baking soda. It works well as a natural way to remove odors from garments and clean them. Sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda into your washing machine with the water and laundry detergent. Once you add the baking soda, toss in your garments and wash them as you usually would.

DIY Fabric Softener

If you don’t want to skip the fabric softener, but still want to use it, then make your own. I have a recipe that I’ve created to help you make your own DIY fabric softener. You will never have softer clothes than when you use this homemade version.

Use Powdered Detergent Instead of Liquid Detergent

Consider switching to powdered detergent instead of liquid detergent. One thing you may notice is that powdered detergent tends to last longer. It is often a bit cheaper than the liquid version.

Most importantly, it works just as well at cleaning clothes. In fact, if you have muddy garments, it is better to use powdered detergent. Some of the leading detergent brands make powdered detergent.

However, I recommend you try making your own laundry soap for both cost and effectiveness. You can even use this with energy efficient or HE machines.

Buy Your Laundry Detergent With Coupons

Save money on laundry detergent by using coupons. Most stores have great deals on laundry detergent, including Target, ShopRite, and Walgreens. Even if you do not have one of these three stores in your area, there is a good chance that you do have other stores that accept coupons.

You can use multiple coupons to get most of your laundry products.

Digital Coupons

Download apps to the stores that you visit, such as Target. You can clip the digital coupons for laundry products and use those coupons when checking out with your laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and other accessories.

Paper Coupons

Check the weekly newspaper for paper coupons on laundry detergent and other laundry supplies that you use. You can cut these manufacturer coupons and use them at different stores.

Printable Coupons

Do not forget to visit websites of laundry brands that you like to use. You might find some printable coupons on their websites that are worth using to save a few extra dollars.
