DIY Potpourri – Add Beautiful Scents Without Chemicals

October 24, 2013 by Tiffany Davis Leave a Comment

I love when the house smells good.  Like when I’m making something delicious in the Crock Pot or baking a yummy treat.  I also used to love to spray chemical products in the air and on fabric to freshen the house up.  I’m not going to go into a tirade on the demon sprays…that is a choice you’ll have to research and decide on for yourself.

I’ve switched over to making a liquid potpourri, or sorts, on the stove top.  I love the way the scent lingers in the air and infuses the house like I’m cooking…even though I’m not.  I usually just pull together a few ingredients from whatever I have in the house.  But there all awesome recipes you can use to invoke a certain scent or feel to the house.  Remember NEVER leave your house with these on the stove!

Apple Pie – the house will smell like fall!

Apple_pieCore and slice an apple, any variety will do. Add apple slices to a small pan filled with water.  Add a few cinnamon sticks and whole cloves (ground of either will do in a pinch).  Now add 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.  Simmer low so you don’t burn your ingredients.  Add water as needed.

Fresh Citrus

Take a 1 large or 2 small lemons and slice.  Add the slices to your pan of water with a 2 – 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract and a few sprigs of rosemary from your garden.  VOILA!

Key Lime Pie (I like pie…)

keylimeslice2 – 3 small limes, sliced up into your water then add 2 – 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract.  Kick it up a notch and add a teaspoon of peppermint extract…Heavenly.

Christmas in a Pot

ChristmasTree5 Cinnamon Sticks – break them up to help the aroma spread.
The peels of 1 lemon and 1 orange
Sliced apple pieces

1 Tablespoon of nutmeg
1 Tablespoon of allspice
2 bay leaves, whole
Add everything to simmering pot of water and you’ve got Christmas in a pot!
