Buttermilk Pie Recipe

September 4, 2015 by Tiffany Davis 7 Comments

This buttermilk pie recipe is based off my husband’s grandmother’s original recipe. Buttermilk pie is a sweet custard pie with just a hint of tang. Even if you aren’t a fan of buttermilk, I think you’ll love the pie. I believe this is a Southern staple because growing up in Arizona, I’d never heard of it. But once I tried Grandmother Mary’s pie, it became one of my favorites. Now 20 years later can make it without looking at the recipe!

Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pie Recipe

Buttermilk Pie Recipe

I usually make buttermilk pie for Thanksgiving; and my Arizona family requests it every year.  I never have leftovers unless I make SEVERAL pies. This buttermilk pie recipe is amazingly simple; no need to be a seasoned chef here. I like it with just a dollop of whipped cream and a warm cup of coffee (yes I’ve eaten it for breakfast).  Be careful, this make quickly become one of your comfort foods. 😉

Grandma's Delicious Vintage Buttermilk Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup room temperature butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 deep dish or 2 regular unbaked 9 inch pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream the sugar and butter together.
  3. Add the flour and beaten eggs and mix well.
  4. Now add the buttermilk and vanilla; mix & pour into unbaked crust
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until tests done. Top should be slightly crusty and brown.
  6. Let cool completely
  7. Serve with whipped cream
  8. Try not to eat it all.

My buttermilk pie recipe is another another thing that reminds me of Fall; probably because I don’t bake in the summer. I am looking forward to sharing this pie tonight at church and in a few months at our family Thanksgiving celebration.

What have you been cooking up in your kitchen? Tell me in the comments below.  And when you make your buttermilk pie, I’d love to hear how you like it!
