You may remember that I planted seed potatoes in one of my 4×4 garden boxes in late January. You can read about that here – I Say Poatoes
Well not quite a month later and it is time for an update!
Here is the bed and 2 buckets now:
The growth has really taken off in the last week. Now every seed potato planted has produced foliage. This morning I decided to give them some help and more depth.
I almost completely buried the plants in the buckets…more root growth, more potatoes. I will continue this until the soil reaches the top of the bucket or it is time to harvest…whatever comes first.
With the bed I added a bit more soil to the entire bed to make up for some of the compaction that happens over time.
Then I made a bit of a mound around each plant. Again this is in hopes that a bit more soil will add more root space to develop potatoes.
According to the seed potato package, these are 65 day potatoes. I will start checking, gently by hand, for potatoes around March 31st. After harvesting these new potatoes I will recondition the bed and plant sweet potatoes for the summer.
Stay tuned!
