10 Home Remedies For an Upset Stomach

December 15, 2020 by Tiffany Davis 6 Comments

When you have an upset stomach, you might have trouble sleeping, using the bathroom, or even relaxing because it hurts that bad. While over-the-counter medications are available, not all of them work well enough, and some even cause unwanted side effects.

If you do not want to take over-the-counter medication for an upset stomach or would much rather find something at home that will give you the relief you need, check out this list of 10 home remedies for an upset stomach that can truly make a difference.

1. Heating Pad

When your stomach is upset and is causing you to experience a lot of pain, a heating pad can help. It can provide warm, soothing relief to your aching body, making you feel more relaxed and at ease. If you do not have a traditional heating pad, you can always make one of your own with a hot water bottle or warm towel.

Once you have your heating pad, you can get comfortable on the couch or bed, place it on your stomach, and try to relax while getting relief from any discomfort you might feel.

2. Ginger Tea

Known for naturally treating upset stomachs, ginger tea is a great beverage to make when you need relief. You can drink it straight or add more to it, such as mint leaves and raw honey. Whether you like it plain or with some added flavor, the ginger tea can work wonders for you, leaving you feeling much better than before.

It is known to help reduce bloating, ease the pain associated with cramps, and prevent vomiting. It can calm your stomach down to help you get through your day.

3. Peppermint Tea

When you need a beverage that can quickly comfort you and relieve stomach pain, peppermint tea is worth a try. Not only is this beverage tasty, but it is also genuinely good for you.

Studies show that peppermint leaves used in peppermint tea bags can relax the muscles and reduce pain, ultimately providing much-needed natural relief for an upset stomach. Like ginger tea, you can drink it plain or add more to it, including sugar, honey, and even milk. This is one of the best home remedies for an upset stomach!

4. Mint Leaves

Mint leaves work well at helping relieve digestive issues that can develop. Whether you have a stomach bug or ate something that did not agree with you, mint leaves can provide you with the relief you need.

Add them to your water bottle or a fresh cup of hot tea to reap the benefits of these leaves. The mint leaves can reduce irritation and inflammation while adding more flavor to any beverage you consume.

5. Carrot Juice

It might sound a bit unusual, but carrot juice is an excellent home remedy for an upset stomach. It works to cleanse the digestive system, which means it might cause you to go to the bathroom, but that is a good thing if you are currently dealing with a lot of constipation.

You do not need to consume too much carrot juice to benefit from what it offers. One glass a day could leave your stomach feeling so much better while keeping you from experiencing bloating, constipation, and indigestion.

6. Warm Bath

When your stomach hurts, and you cannot put your finger on why it is bothering you so much, a warm bath might do the trick. You should get into the tub full of warm water, add your favorite bath salts and bubbles, and then relax. The warm water will soothe your aching stomach while helping you relax.

When your body is more relaxed, the pain that you were feeling could start to go away. While it does not necessarily relieve all types of stomach-related issues, it helps tremendously with stomach cramps and constipation issues.

7. Bananas

If you like bananas, you are in luck because bananas can help with an upset stomach. The antacid effect provided by bananas reduces inflammation and helps clear up any indigestion you might have after eating something that did not sit well in your stomach. While you might not feel that hungry when experiencing an upset stomach, try eating at least half of a banana to get relief.

8. Chamomile Tea

Another great beverage to consume when you have an upset stomach is chamomile tea. It has such a light and enjoyable taste to it but is also great at relieving gas and bloating. It may reduce cramps associated with menstrual cycles, too.

You can drink the chamomile tea warm or cold. Prepare it the way you like it, and sip slowly to savor the flavor while getting natural relief for your pain.

9. Turmeric

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric works well at helping soothe an upset stomach. It can clear indigestion and keep you from feeling nauseous. You can add it to a beverage to make it easier to consume. You might want to create a smoothie using fresh fruits and turmeric to relieve you of some of your stomach pain. This is another of my favorite home remedies for an upset stomach.

10. Club Soda

When your stomach feels bloated, you are constipated, and dealing with a lot of pain, try drinking club soda. The carbonation works with your stomach’s natural acids, not against it. When consuming club soda, you might feel the urge to burp, but there is nothing wrong with that.

It is an excellent way to get the gas out, even if it is coming out of your mouth in the form of a burp. You can drink any club soda that you prefer, whether you like it plain or want a flavored option that will taste even better. You can drink the club soda cold or at room temperature.

Home Remedies for an Upset Stomach

When your stomach is hurting, and you need quick relief at home, try one or more of these remedies. You can use what you have on hand, whether you already have peppermint tea, club soda, turmeric, or any of the other home remedies listed above.

You do not necessarily need to take traditional medication to get relief from the pain and feel better. No matter what is causing your stomach to feel upset, you can try these remedies to see how well they might work for you.
