Onion powder is something many of us use in our everyday cooking, but have you ever thought of making it yourself? There is one way that I make onion powder and I can’t wait to share that with you!
What is Onion Powder?
Although it may sound fancy, Onion Powder is nothing but dehydrated onions. It’s dehydrated and then ground up to make a delicious seasoning that you can use for everyday cooking. I use onion powder for soups, chili, casseroles, and even omelets. You can put this seasoning in literally any savory dish and it will make it taste amazing!
Ingredients to Make Onion Powder
The great thing about making onion powder right at home is that it only requires one ingredient. You are going to need 3 small yellow onions. Although it may seem odd that you only need one ingredient, this is a good thing.
When you make it from home yourself, you at least know what’s in it! Onion powder is simply ground-up yellow onions.
What Equipment Do I Need to Make DIY Onion Powder?
You’ll be surprised how little you need to make your own DIY onion powder. You’ll need:
A good knife for dicing up your onions.
A simple dehydrator – I used my Nesco Snackmaster Pro (budget friendly!).
A tool for powdering the dehydrated onions. You can use a mini food processor like Cuisinart Mini or a Mortar and Pestle which will actually give you a finer grind to your powder.
How to Make Onion Powder
Now, here comes the fun part. Learning how to make onion powder is so simple, you’ll wonder why you have not done it DIY before.
Start by peeling your onions. Once they are peeled, you are going to dice them!
Take the diced-up onions and place them on a dehydrator tray and make sure you fill-up the tray.
You will want to set the dehydrator for 125 degrees F. The diced up onions will need to dehydrate for about 24 hours until it’s dry.

Once the onions are dry, you are going to put them in the food processor.
You’ll want to grind until you get powder-like results.
Take note that a mortar and a pestle will help give you the best powder-like results.

Go ahead and store the onion powder properly!
How do I store onion powder?
Once you’ve taken the onion powder and created a ground-up masterpiece, you are going to want to store it. You can buy your own glass spice jars and labels or use a recycled spice container and put the onion powder in there.
Make sure your onion powder is store in an air-tight container in a cool and dark place (like your spice cabinet).
You’ll want to make sure you keep the lid on the seasoning when stored. And give it a shake every few days for the first 2 weeks to prevent caking or clumping and prevent any moisture from allowing mold to grow.
How long does homemade onion powder last?
Homemade onion powder should retain its flavor for up to a year in your spice cabinet.

Why does onion powder get hard?
Have you ever gone to open the onion powder and it was hard?
This is because moisture got to your seasonings. When any kind of moisture is added to the mixture, it will harden.
What can I use onion powder in?
There is no limit to what you can use homemade onion powder in. I think I put a little onion powder in almost any dish I make! It will disperse into your food and give it a delicious onion flavor that you just can’t resist.
I’ve used it in recipes like Homemade Ranch Seasoning, Ground Beef Jerky Recipe and my Crispy Baked Chicken Legs Drumsticks Recipe.
