While your traditional New Year’s Eve plans may be changed due to the current state of the world, you can still have a memorable time ringing in the New Year with the people you love, such as your significant other and children.
While New Year’s Eve will not necessarily look the same this year as it has in previous years, you can make the most of it and even start new traditions. If you would like to have a wonderful time with loved ones, check out this list of things to do to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home.
Hang Balloons Around the Home
Start decorating the home with the traditional colors used at New Year’s Eve parties, including black, gold, and white. You may even want to get 2021 balloons that you can hang on the walls of your home. Having the balloons hanging up around the house is just one way to make things feel more festive.
You can do a lot with these balloons, such as prepare your own arch for the doorway, hang them from a string across the ceiling, and even throw them around on the floor before taking photos in front of them. The kids will enjoy playing with these balloons while you can use them for decorative purposes.
You can get nice party balloons at your local Dollar Store – see What to Buy at the Dollar Store and What to Skip.
Wear Decorative New Year’s Eve Party Hats
Go out and purchase some decorative New Year’s Eve party hats that you and everyone else in the home can wear. You will feel more festive when you have these silly yet adorable hats on your head.
You may find other New Year’s Eve accessories to wear with the party hats, including glasses in the shape of 2021 that you can wear on your face. Even if you do not wear these accessories the whole night, you can wear them towards the end of the night and take lots of pictures.
Make Some of Your Favorite Cocktails
You may not be able to go out to a party because you want to avoid crowds and even smaller gatherings, but that does not mean you cannot have some of your favorite cocktails at home. All you need to have is a few essential ingredients to start preparing your cocktails, including vodka, cranberry juice, orange juice, rum, and even some tequila.
It all depends on the types of alcoholic beverages that you enjoy drinking the most. You may already know how to make your favorite cocktails. If not, you can search for recipes online with ease and find some great recipes worth trying when you want to ring in the New Year at home with your loved ones.

Get Dressed Up in a New Year’s Eve Outfit
You will feel more excited about celebrating New Year’s Eve at home if you take the time to get dressed up, just like you would if you were going out to celebrate. Instead of staying in pajamas, consider wearing an outfit that you would wear to the club or for special occasions.
Go the extra mile by putting on that dress that makes you feel confident, along with a pair of heels and some of your favorite accessories, such as bracelets, earrings, and a necklace.
While you may not be going anywhere except for different rooms throughout the home, you can still take photos looking your best and upload them to your social media accounts.
Have Your Favorite Games Ready to Play
While waiting on the clock, one of the best ways to get time to go by a little faster is to play some of your favorite games. If you have a larger home, you can do an indoor scavenger hunt to get everyone excited to try to find the items on their list.
If you do not want to do the indoor scavenger hunt, you still have plenty of other options, including Pictionary, Scrabble, Monopoly or Clue (a family favorite here). This year we got a new game called Donner Dinner Party and we’ll be playing Dixit that we got last year.
Get those board games and your deck of cards ready for use by putting them out on your dining room table and letting each person in the household pick at least one game to play throughout the night.
Time will go by much faster when you are having a good time with your loved ones.
Watch a New Year’s Eve Special
Watching a New Year’s Eve special might put you in more of a festive mood! Even with all the changes this year, specials are still set to be televised this year, although they might look different.
You will get to watch a special on television where various celebrities perform to some of their latest hits no matter what. You can turn the volume up and dance around with your loved ones while watching the special.
You can ball drops of the past on YouTube – here is Dick Clark’s last one from 2003.
Have Music Playing in the Background
Do not forget about having music playing in the background throughout the night. You can check Spotify for different New Year’s Eve playlists that will have all the best songs to listen to on such an exciting night
If you do not want to listen to a premade list, you can create a playlist that consists of the songs you like listening to and want to hear during such a special time where you are ringing in the New Year with some special people in your life.
New Year’s Eve at Home
While things are quite different this year than they have ever been before, there is no reason not to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home with your loved ones. You can still make the most of this time by spending quality time with those who live in the house with you. Quality time will mean the most to your partner and children.
When you consider doing some of the things mentioned above, you can expect to create unforgettable memories of times shared with loved ones. There is no better way to celebrate the start of a New Year than to do so while surrounded by people who support you, encourage you, and want the best for you.
Get those balloons out, pick out the perfect outfit, and figure out which cocktails you want to prepare to make the night more exciting! It will turn into your best New Year’s Eve ever.
