Dollar Store Homestead Supplies

February 10, 2015 by Tiffany Davis 6 Comments

Dollar Store Homestead Supplies, you ask…you betcha!  Maybe you’ll be as surprised as I was with how many dollar store homestead supplies you can find!  I’ll admit, I haven’t always been a fan of dollar stores; but I am a woman converted!  I’ve put a list together of my top 10 favorite dollar store homestead supplies.  I hope this list helps you make a list of your own – we can always use more seed money, right? 😉

Dollar Store Homestead Supplies

Remember, with any dollar store, items can be hit or miss.  These are items I find pretty regularly at my local store.

Like thrift, a dollar store take patience and the willingness to come back often to see what’s in stock.  But you truly can find some great dollar store homestead supplies that are worth the trouble and will certainly save you some cash.

A little FYI from me to you on your dollar store homestead supplies – Dollar Tree offers online shopping and FREE shipping to the store of your choice.

Top 10 Dollar Store Homestead Supplies

In no particular order…

  1. Buckets
A perfect example of dollar store homestead supplies are buckets; I find buckets of all kinds at my dollar store.  I use these in the house and garden so there is always room for more!
  2. Duct TapeDollar Store Homestead Supplies by ImperfectlyHappy.com
I swear my husband has 101 uses for duct tape.  I find it is great for quick repairs and I am always looking for our roll.
  3. Wooden Clothes Pins
I love to hang my laundry out ( see Clothesline Love & Appreciation ) but I am always losing my good clothes pins.  I like to have a few bags of the dollar store pins on hand.
  4. Sewing Needles & Safety Pins
I am not a fantastic seamstress but some of the dollar store homestead supplies I appreciate are the needles and safety pins.  These items are so much more expensive at the fabric store!  I can keep a good supply on hand for quick clothing repairs.
  5. Towels and RagsDollar Store Homestead Supplies by ImperfectlyHappy.com
It is a struggle to keep my nice towels, well nice.  I like that my dollar store carries both utility towels and rags.  I prefer to get them in white because I’ve found the colored ones will bleed color for a long time.
  6. Glass Containers
I love glass containers for my DIY Hand Cream and even for storing my seeds.
  7. Yarn, Twine & Rope
This is hit and miss but I have been able to store up some great thick ropes and twine as well as pretty yarn.  This alone is a great reason to shop for dollar store homestead supplies; stock up when you find the good stuff!
  8. Food Storage
I try not to do much plastic but I will store cold food and dry food items in BPA free plastic containers and zipper bags.  I also make DIY Ice Packs with those zipper bags.
  9. CandlesDollar Store Homestead Supplies by ImperfectlyHappy.com
A prepared homestead should always have a good supply of emergency candles.  I can usually find packs with several candles.  There are also decorative and scented candles, if that’s your thing.
  10. First Aid Supplies
Dollar store homestead supplies galore!  I always find first aid supplies at the dollar store – band aids, large bandages, latex free bandages, peroxide, pain reliever…need I go on?  Check out my Mini First Aid Kit that I made with supplies from the dollar store.

I agree with almost everything on this list: Scented candles are some of THE most toxic items you can put in your home! There is quite a bit of information regarding this. I would be ok with the plastic baggies for making ice packs, but no other plastics for food use, please, as they leach toxic materials into your food just by being in it, cold OR hot.
Nice post, and I’ll be visiting my local dollar store soon!

I put together a first aid kit using DT products. I also bought rope, duct tape and candles. Soap and small bags of nuts and dried fruit for a bug out bag also. Dollar Tree is a great resource!
