Why You Should Start Keeping a Journal

December 31, 2020 by Tiffany Davis 2 Comments

Have you thought about keeping a journal but are not sure if you should do it? There is nothing wrong with keeping a journal. It is an excellent idea for anyone who wants to have an outlet to express themselves.

Why You Should Start Keeping a Journal

The advantages of journaling are tremendous. You will learn more about yourself as you continue to write on the pages of your journal. You can even use the journal as a tool to keep you occupied while reducing some of the stress you might experience when dealing with different situations.

If you are not already keeping a journal, now is the time to purchase a good one and start using it.

It Is the Perfect Stress Reliever

Journaling is a great way to relieve unwanted stress naturally. When you feel down about things that are going on in life, you might not want to always vent to loved ones because it makes you feel like an annoyance or burden. While your loved ones might not mind hearing you vent, there is something else you can do to let things out.

You can start writing in a journal where you will get to talk about both positive and negative experiences. You can write about the good things that happened to you or the bad things that put you in a negative mindset for the rest of the day. It will feel good to get it all out on a sheet of paper in your journal.

You Can Express Your Thoughts and Feelings on Paper

When you keep a journal, you get to express your thoughts and feelings on paper without worrying about judgment from other people. If you feel like you cannot truly express yourself to those closest to you, such as your significant other, best friend, siblings, or parents, you can always write down what you are thinking about or feeling in your journal.

If you take the time to write it all down, you may notice that you naturally feel better. While you may not have told others how you were feeling, you could let it all out on paper, which is a lot like a therapy session where you can be as open as you would like to be.

It Will Keep Your Mind Occupied

Writing in a journal is a great way to keep yourself occupied. If you are going through some painful things and feel like your mind is always wandering, you might need something that helps you focus and keeps you busy.

If you are holding a journal, you can start writing down thoughts and feelings, creating short poems, or even making up stories as you go along. You might want to write some goals for yourself that you would like to look back on in a few months to see if you achieved those specific goals.

You Can Take the Journal With You When You Travel

The great thing about journaling is that you can take your lightweight journal with you wherever you go. Whether you are at home, headed to work, or even on vacation, you can keep your journal with you and use it to document different things that are going on in your life.

You may even want to add drawings and photos to the pages of your journal to look back on and reminisce in a few months or years.

You Can Reflect on the Things You Have Done in the Past

Having a journal gives you a chance to watch yourself grow into the person you want to become. You will get to go back to the beginning of your journal and read some of the things you used to write about when you were first getting started. Sometimes, it is not always easy for people to realize how much they have grown and matured.

However, when you have a journal in front of you, reading through the pages will show you just how much you have managed to change for the better over the weeks or months. It will also help you reflect on any negative situations that have happened in the past.

Journaling Will Help You Become a Better Writer

If you would like to become a writer in the future, keeping a journal will help you become a better writer. Whether you need to work on your spelling or grammar, you will get the hang of writing in a way that makes more sense.

You will get to create your sense of writing style that is unique from others.

Writing in a journal each day can even spark some creativity in you, making you feel more inspired to try new things to write about when you have the time to do so.

It Is Possible to Start Writing Down Different Goals You Might Have

You can use your journal to make a list of specific goals you would like to reach. You may want to become more financially stable in the future, find a new job, or have more success at something important to you.

No matter your goals, writing them in your journal is a great way to keep track of those goals while holding yourself accountable for the things you need to do to achieve them.

You Can Write Anything You Want in Your Journal

The most important reason to start keeping a journal is that you will get to write anything you want inside of it. Because it belongs to you, it does not matter what you have to say in the journal.

It is a great way to express frustration and get things off your chest without ever worrying about people judging you for the things you have written in the pages of your journal.

Types of Journals to Consider

  • Traditional – pen and paper or digital
  • Bullet
  • Art
  • Gratitude Journal
  • Prayer
  • Fitness or Health

Start Keeping a Journal

Keeping a journal is a great idea. It is the perfect way to relieve some unwanted stress, get thoughts and feelings out there, and even set attainable goals for yourself.

You can purchase a journal with plenty of space for you to start writing, doodling, and even pasting pictures to the pages. You will not regret how journaling will make you feel or the positive impact it can have on your mental health.
