Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

November 30, 2020 by Tiffany Davis 8 Comments

Homemade Worcestershire Sauce, it can be done! With a few simple ingredients you can have your very own liquid gold condiment.

I love to you Worcestershire Sauce in stews, ground beef recipes and even in my mop sauce when I smoke brisket and turkey.

The original Worcestershire sauce, a fermented condiment, dates back to the early 19th century. It was created by by chemists in Worcestershire, England; they later went on to form the company Lea & Perrins. The term “Worcestershire Sauce” however could not be trademarked and is now considered a generic term.

Why Make Homemade Worcestershire Sauce?

Many of the brands of this delicious condiment are now filled with questionable ingredients.

This homemade version isn’t the exact recipe, but a quick version with much of the traditional flavor.

I love making my own extracts and spice rubs so it is a natural transition for me to go into condiments now.

Does Worcestershire sauce have gluten?

Several of the commercial brands do include gluten. This recipe can be gluten free if you choose a soy sauce that is labeled as such. If you are unable to find a gluten free soy sauce you can replace the soy with coconut aminos.

The Ingredients You Need to Prepare Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

  • Apple Cider Vinegar – this will give you the authentic fermented flavor of traditional Worcestershire Sauce.
  • Soy Sauce – Also adds to a richer fermented flavor. You could use fish sauce in its place.
  • Brown sugar – Adding sweet notes the the rich flavor of the Worcestershire sauce.
  • Mustard powder – gives the sauce a little heat, but not enough to last or burn.

You’ll also need garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon and some water when mixing your homemade sauce.

How to Store Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

You can keep the homemade sauce in your refrigerator for 1 – 2 months. Be sure to keep in a container with a lid. You can use a mason jar, glass sauce bottles or re-purpose a jar from your kitchen.

Make sure to give your homemade Worcestershire Sauce a good shake before using it.
