As we move into winter, it’s also a great time to stock up on fresh potatoes. These are perfect for holiday dishes like mashed potatoes and potato salads. Many stores will be offering sales throughout the winter months, so check their flyers regularly.

Canned Foods

There is never a better time to stock up on canned foods than right now. Canned fruits, vegetables, and other staples are often heavily discounted during the holiday season, making them a great option for stocking up.

Just make sure to check the expiration dates and stock up on only what you will use. Stores usually heavily discount their canned foods for the holiday season, this is especially true for canned vegetables.

Ham

Some people skip the turkey and go straight to the ham on Thanksgiving! If you’re looking for a last-minute holiday bargain, look for sales on hams around this time of year. Ham is also versatile and can be used in a variety of different dishes, so it makes sense to stock up while it’s on sale. If anything, you can buy your ham now and use it for Christmas!

Butter

There has been a major rumor that the cost of butter will be going up soon. You can easily freeze butter, so stock up on this holiday favorite while you can. When I have visited the local stores, the cost of butter is already rising! You can actually freeze butter. If you have the room, put as much butter as you can in the freezer for later this year.

Sugar

Sugar is also an essential staple for the winter holidays. With all of the baking that’s happening around the holidays, you’ll usually see sugar marked down and on sale. Sugar is shelf stable, so you can buy several pounds and store it. You can also repackage sugar into your own containers to keep it even fresher. I like to put the date I purchased the sugar and the expiration date on the new container.

Non Food Items to Stock Up On

In addition to stocking up on food items, there are a number of non-food items that you can save money on during the holiday season. These include things like decorations, batteries, wrapping paper and gift bags, as well as other seasonal supplies.
