Sausage Gravy Recipe

December 4, 2020 by Tiffany Davis 6 Comments

Sausage gravy has always been one of my favorite meals, especially for breakfast. I have fond memories of my grandpa making me biscuits and gravy when I would stay at their house on the weekends. This is definitely a comfort food!

This simple sausage gravy is just like Grandpa used to make on Sunday mornings. Some call this a country gravy… just don’t be late calling me to breakfast!

What is Sausage Gravy?

Sausage gravy is typically a creamy gravy served over biscuits for breakfast. Our family recipe comes from relatives that lived in West Virginia and Illinois. My grandfather was a Navy cook so it was most likely perfected there.

What to Put Sausage Gravy On.

Well for me there is nothing better than this creamy white gravy over my homemade biscuits. But you can put this gravy over eggs, hash brown or over my Breakfast Casserole with Bacon and Hash Browns.

You can even make this sausage gravy for dinner and serve over mashed potatoes.

Why is Sausage Gravy White?

It is white because it is a milk based gravy.

Can Sausage Gravy Be Frozen?

Yes, you can make this gravy recipe ahead of time. Store it in the refrigerator for 24 hours or freeze for up to 3 months in an air tight container.

It is great to freeze in small individual servings for a quick breakfast as needed.

Ingredients Needed for this Gravy Recipe

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage – you can use pork sausage or beef sausage
  • 2 cups milk – whole milk is best, I even use half & half sometimes
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour – this is your thickening agent.
  • Salt and pepper to taste – don’t skip your salt and pepper!

Equipment Needed for Gravy

  • Cast iron skillet – yes you can make it in any skillet but the cast iron gives it the best flavor in my opinion.
  • Whisk
  • Measuring Cup

Steps to Making Sausage Gravy

Cook sausage over medium heat until it is cooked through and browned. Cast iron gives it a nice, crispy texture.

Once sausage is cooked combine milk and flour and whisk together to remove any lumps.
Slowly pour milk/flour mixture into the pan and turn down heat.
Cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes until gravy thickens, stirring often to prevent burning.
Remove from heat.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
